Having an electrical supply to your home is a part of everyday life, so making sure that it is as safe and reliable as possible is essential. Faulty earthing, loose connections, cracked fittings, badly routed cables or the wrong cable type, exposed conductors, miswired lighting, incorrect breaker or fuse rating, and many more hidden problems can mean that an electrical installation is an accident waiting to happen, so it is important to make sure that any work done to it is carried out by trained and qualified engineers.

When performing any electrical work - even in your own house, except for a few specific changes such as like-for-like replacement of outlets or replacing a damaged cable, all changes or additions are notifiable to the local building control authority. This means that before starting any work you must notify the authority of the planned changes, and then after the work is completed you must arrange for them to inspect the work for safety and quality.
